More ArticlesWhat Makes a Good Sportsbook?Read Full Article Free Odds When you bet on sports is to beat the 'Oddsmakers' or the 'Odds Compilers' and win some money. Additionally, placing a bet on your favorite sport event makes the game exciting and more enjoyable. To place a sports bet, you go to a sportsbook gambling, physical or online. You could also bet over the phone with many sportsbooks. Note that a sports book or sportsbook is not the same as an oddsmaker. The sportsbook simply accepts sports bets. An oddsmaker is a person who sets the betting odds. You need to state what you are betting on by making a selection, the type of bet and the amount you are wagering. Your selection will obviously depend on the odds offered, so you will want to examine the range of odds available before you make a decision. Point SpreadThe Pointspread - also called the line, or spread - is used as a margin to handicap the favorite team. The oddsmaker or handicapper "gives" points (or goals) to the underdog. The bettor must take either the favorite or the underdog. The favorite is always indicated by a minus sign (e.g. -7.0) and the underdog by a plus sign (e.g.+7.0). The betting outcome of the game is determined by taking the actual game score and finding the point (or goal) difference between each of the two teams playing. If the spread is offered with a half-point (e.g. -7.0 for the favorite Green Bay) by the handicappers, then there can be no "push" and therefore you will either win or lose the bet. Sports BettingSports betting is the ultimate money game for the sports fan. Through any of a number of online sportsbooks you can bet on the outcome of baseball, basketball, football, hockey and soccer games, car races, boxing matches and other popular sporting events. If you know your favorite sport inside and out, you can overcome "the juice", beat the oddsmakers and fatten your wallet. Also, placing a sports bet makes the outcome of the game more meaningful and the game itself more enjoyable and thrilling. Sports betting is both a game of skill, plus a game of luck. Sports betting is much like poker in that you gather as much information as possible about a situation, and then use this knowledge to your advantage in trying to determine a winner. Just like in poker though, luck is also a factor as well. However, a knowledgable sports better will overcome bad luck over the long run. Being consistent in sports betting is not about luck, it's about knowledge of your sport and the players. You must be disciplined when it comes to betting; amateurs let their emotions dictate the projected outcome of a game; professionals use all of the information in their arsenal to objectively pick a winner. The sportsbook and the oddsmakerA sports handicapper is someone who attempts to predict the outcome of a sports event and win money in the process. A handicapper might predict, for instance, that the Vancouver Canucks will beat the Calgary Flames straight up. For a bet of $100, the sports handicapper will get his original bet plus $65 dollars back if the Canucks win. Sports handicapping has expanded rapidly in the past ten years, with the widespread use of the Internet. Now, all the stats you could possibly imagine are available online. Instead of calling up your bookie and getting a Fed-Ex package full of cash when you win, you can simply login to a sports betting site and place your bet online. People of all ages are placing bets online, for a wide variety of sports, including football, soccer and hockey. |
